Mrs D
Wow - this is looking great. Try and play aound with the columns and make the title bigger. Also, make sure that you are providing links in terms of font and colour from the front cover.

CONSTRUCTION: Editing of FRONT COVER

I liked the way "SCAR" stood out so I decided to make the features stand out by adding some colour. So I've copied the same style as the title to the first letters of bands/artists to make them look unique too.

I've added more features, and made "SCAR" stand out by making it red, this makes it more vibrant and easy to read.

I have flipped the photo the other way round to see what it looked like and to give me more space for text on the page. This is because a lot of people commented on how bare it looked, so I will add more features around the face.

I've added a white shadow behind the title to make it eye catching.

From Mrs S
With all the preparation, I'm really looking forward to seeing what you do with your construction. It promises to be really good!
CONSTRUCTION
I will now move on to my construction as I have looked at all the necessary codes and conventions to make high-quality and effective contents page, double page spread and front cover.
PLANNING: Evaluation of Final Layout 8
This is my final layout for my double page spread and I am very happy with it. I have used design 3 as a template for this layout, adding a more variety of pictures and 3 columns. I have done this to make it more interesting for the audience to look at and more unique. Looking at this design over all I think it is very neat and kind to the eye, it’s not too jam-packed with different shapes and sizes. I did this deliberately as the use of shapes can be seen as immature whereas my magazine is based for late teens to adults. I have tried to make it sophisticated, which I think this design achieves. I have kept the title where in the top right corner to give enough room for text and pictures on the opposite page, and I have also kept to 3 columns across the page. The text boxes will be full with writing as they look bare in these pictures, but it will look good when they are filled.
PLANNING: Evaluation of Layout 7
I decided this time to use 3 columns to seperate my text. This was because most of my real media artefacts had 3 columns and I wanted mine to look professional like theirs. It would be good for a portrait photo of an artists face as it is a decent size. I have added a pull quote at the top to see what it would look like. I will have to consider a colour that would stand out against the background of the pictures;
I still like the title where it is, this feature makes it look easy to read and eye catching, I may add in more pull quotes when i get to the actual design.

PLANNING: Evaluation of Layout Design 6
I wanted to see what the title looked like being fully stretched across the full length of A3 and it does look effective, it would attract people’s attention. I included 2 pictures put between text boxes as I feel this makes it an interesting layout.
PLANNING: Evaluation of Layout Design 5
I changed the number of columns but I do not like it as the text boxes are to thin, and it doesn’t give enough room for pictures. Comparing it to design 3, which is my favourite design, it makes the design look to compact.
PLANNING: Evaluation of Layout Design 4
In this design I wanted to see what it would like with the two pictures being at the top however now looking at it, it looks bare like the first 2 designs. I will change the amount of columns I have next to see if that will help this issue. I added in the title to see what it would look like and I am happy with it in the top right corner.
PLANNING: Evaluation of Layout Design 3
This time I included even more pictures because I still thought the 2 previous designs were bare. I’m still keeping to 2 columns because I think it looks neat. I like this design a lot it’s a perfect amount of pictures and text, with the title on the one page. I’m considering using this for my final design.
PLANNING: Evaluation of Layout Design 2
In this design I added another picture as the design before, I felt, didn’t have enough imagery for the reader to look at. I looked back to my questionnaire and found that people said they liked looking at pictures more than the text, so I had to take this into consideration. I changed the size of the title because I didn’t like the idea of it going over the crease in the page.
PLANNING: Evaluation of Layout Design 1
For this design I decided to stick with 2 columns as this was to give me an idea of the space I needed to fill on A3. I think this design is neat and easy to read, however could be seen as quite boring. I made the title go over onto the second page to help this stand out, but putting it in the crease of the page might make it hard to read.

PLANNING: Evaluation Of Final Layout Design 8
I’m really happy with my final design. I took into consideration all my negatives of the other designs as I wasn’t happy with the last two. I set it out in two columns to create more organisation of the page. I also edited my logo as I wasn’t happy as it stood out in a bad way on the page. I added some black lines around the writing, this I am happy with. I also included the editor’s letter as from my experience from reading magazines it gives the reader information about what to expect in the issue. It would be useful to the audience to have almost a relationship with me as the editor.
I deliberately didn’t make any of my text or pictures on its side or in different shapes as I wanted a mature approach, and also it would not appeal to people who like rock – which are mainly men. This layout is, in my opinion, is mature and easy to read and find features quickly. I will think about my font and size when I start constructing.

PLANNING: Evaluation of Layout 7
Looking at this design I don’t think it looks very attractive. Firstly, the text looks jumbled up with the pictures put with the text, and secondly it is very bare. I tried to see what it would look like being as simple as possible, not including the editor’s letter and the title “contents” in small font. I also have forgotten to put the background of my logo on, so it makes it even more colourless. However I do like the quote coming out of the text, but I think maybe the font has to be different or maybe not to write in capital letters as I feel the text doesn’t stand out from the title or logo.
PLANNING: Evaluation of Layout Design 6
I put the title at the side to help this stand out and changed the colour of it. This is a lot different than other magazines and will help to be individual. I have put the contents next to the title at the top with the editor’s letter underneath it, this gives it some structure however it does not appear this way visually. I need to put a black line around the boxes to show this structure. I will do this in my final design. I again am not happy with this design because it still looks jumbled up, I will have to think about making it more organised in my final one.
PLANNING: Evaluation of Layout Design 5
In this design I made the title really big to stand out from the rest of the features on the page. I changed the position of the text to see if it would look good other than in the middle. I put the pictures at the side of it to fill up the space moving the text created however I still feel that it doesn’t fit within columns. It looks too mixed up and doesn’t flow. I will not be using this design.
PLANNING: Evaluation of Design 4
This time added some colours and font in to see the effect. I put the text in the middle again as I like this design but this time made the pictures intervene with the writing (so almost squashing it for space for the picture). I only put 4 pictures in this time to make it less crowded and make the vital features stand out, which I think helps. I have put the title and logo at the top again as I feel putting it at the bottom didn’t serve it’s purpose, I will move it around again to see a good effect.
PLANNING: Evaluation of Design 3
I put the title and logo at the bottom to see what it would look like and to see if it would be different and effective. Although looking at it I feel it doesn’t fit in I will have to rethink where I put it in my next design. This time I didn’t overlap the pictures as I said before, to me it doesn’t look right. So I have spread the pictures out around the text making it look more professional and structured. I like the idea of pictures around the text and as it doesn’t make it so crowded. Also I like the text in the middle as it makes it easy to read and stand out. The editor’s letter at the top looks good also at the top.
PLANNING: Evaluation of Design 2
I think this design is really simple. The way it looks is quite boring as it is nothing out of the ordinary. I have overlapped the pictures again but I have now decided I do not like the effect as it makes the pictures unclear and again too busy for the eye to focus on one thing. I moved the logo next to the title and I like it there, it makes it noticeable rather than in the corner with the page number. I have included an editor’s letter which will add a more formal side to the magazine by informing the audience what to expect.
PLANNING: Evaluation of Design 1
This design is very interesting. I like the way the photos overlap each other and the separation of the contents. However the more I look at it I feel the background is too busy, and I don’t like the logo of the magazine at the bottom. I will have to move it to another position. The overall look is quite effective, other than those reasons, as it stands out than usual content pages.
From Mrs S
I like your final choice. I also agree with your comments. Shame you couldn't use the WLR logo though.

PLANNING: Evaluation of Final Design 8
This is my chosen design for my magazine. I like the font and size of font because it stands out and is not too small for the reader. I have chosen red for the shadow of the text as this was one of my chosen colours that represented rock music. The title I am very happy with because the colours and background compliment each other to represent rock music but also looks grown up at the same time. It adds an edge to the magazine as it has a busy background and colours that are strong and appealing to the audience I am basing it on (teenagers to young adults).
The layout I have kept simple because I didn’t want to clog up information at the front with different shapes and font. Also I wanted it to be the opposite of the title making the layout almost sophisticated.
Features I have included on the front are:
· A interview with my made up band “SCAR” which I have helped stand out with a white line through it representing a scar
· A CD cover of The Killer’s new album, which I have signed using Paint programme, making it look like a signed copy.
The background will be of “SCAR”, where I will get my friend to dress up and I will photograph her specifically for the front cover. I will then edit it and make it black and white which, I think, will represent Rock music. If I do, I will have to change the font to white so this too stands out; this is also why I have put a red shadow behind the writing to help add more visual effect. I will make sure none of the writing over laps the face of the woman in the background.
I have included the issue number and date at the top and bar code and price at the bottom out of the way so it’s not to get in the way of features or pictures.

PLANNING: Evaluation of Design 7
In this design I included the logo “WLR” that I created. However it doesn’t look as good as I had hoped. It stands out but in a bad way, it doesn’t fit in. However, I really like the font and writing of the features and subtitles.

PLANNING: Evaluation of Layout Design 5 & Design 6
Design 5
I changed the layout, with the title at the bottom and the price and issue number at the top. This layout stands out from normal magazine front covers as it is unusual. However I had trouble trying to make the background colour merge in to the top where the price and issue number are. I will have to rethink how I present the rectangular box next time.
Design 6
I like this design a lot. This time I changed the colour of the writing and changed filter effects to make the text stand out against the background.

PLANNING: Evaluation of Layout Design 4
This time I put my chosen name at the top to see what it would look like. I have involved colour this time to also see the effect. I like this layout a lot especially the logo “WLR”. I put “Kiss” as my background picture just to see what it would look like. I would have to properly crop my photo to make it fit properly and not stretch and distort.
In a discussion with a audience over looking my design I have been told that the white band at the bottom does not fit, it doesn’t look pleasant. So I will have to look at softening the colour to merge it in with or to get rid of the colour white at the bottom. It doesn’t make it look at a magazine.

Whilst discussing ideas with my class mates we decided that “Scar” would be a good name for my made up rock band. The name is rough and reflects the edgy rock music. I then decided to put a slash through the writing to make it look like a “scar”. Also one of my friends has agreed to dress up to be “SCAR”, and I have chosen to make her look similar to Kiss’s costumes, but in the shape as a scar.
PLANNING: Evaluation of Layout Design 3
I decided to put the title on the side to make it different from other magazines; however it then makes it hard to make up the space with other features and sub titles. Also it would make the picture obscure to fit in the thin width. I like the price and bar code positions though.
